Becoming a Christian

Maybe you’ve been going to church for years. Maybe you’ve never opened a Bible. Maybe someone invited you to this website, and you’re simply wondering what Christianity is really about.

The Bible’s answer is both simple and profound: becoming a Christian means being reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. It isn’t about becoming a better person or earning God’s favour. It’s about recognizing our need for a Saviour and trusting in the One God has provided.

1. Recognize that you are a sinner

The Bible tells us that every one of us has sinned against God.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23 (CSB)

Sin is more than doing bad things. It is turning away from God and living as though we belong to ourselves. We may compare ourselves with other people and think we’re doing pretty well, but God’s standard is holiness. None of us can meet it.

That’s why we can’t save ourselves. Being a good person, going to church, giving money, or trying harder can’t remove our sin. We need God’s forgiveness.

2. Understand what God has done for you

The good news is that God didn’t leave us in our sin. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ.

Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live. He willingly died on the cross, taking the punishment our sins deserved. Then He rose from the dead, conquering death.

This is the heart of the Christian gospel: Jesus Christ died for sinners and rose again so that those who trust in Him can be forgiven and reconciled to God.

Romans 5:8 says, “But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

God’s salvation is a gift of grace. You don’t earn it. You receive it.

3. Turn from your sin

The Bible calls this repentance. To repent means to turn around. Instead of continuing to live in rebellion against God, you turn toward Him.

Repentance doesn’t mean promising that you’ll never sin again. It means honestly acknowledging your sin and recognizing that you need God’s mercy. It means changing the direction of your life because you now want to follow Christ.

Jesus doesn’t call us simply to add Christianity to our lives. He calls us to follow Him.

4. Put your faith in Jesus Christ

Repentance and faith belong together. We turn from our sin and turn to Christ.

Faith means trusting Jesus rather than trusting yourself. You aren’t saved because you know all the answers, because you’ve cleaned up your life, or because you’ve done enough good things. You are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

You don’t become a Christian by becoming good enough for God. You become a Christian by admitting that you aren’t good enough, and trusting the One who is.

Ephesians 2:8–9 says, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast.”

5. Surrender your life to Christ

Jesus isn’t simply a Saviour we ask to forgive our sins. He is Lord.

When you trust Christ, you give yourself to Him. You acknowledge that He has the right to lead your life. You begin a new journey of following Him, learning His Word, loving His people, turning away from sin, and growing in obedience.

That doesn’t mean you’ll become perfect. Christians still struggle and sometimes fall into sin. But when Christ saves us, He begins changing us. The Christian life is a life of grace, growth, and joyful obedience.

What should I do now?

If you understand the gospel and you’re ready to turn from your sin and trust Jesus Christ, you can talk to God right now. You don’t need special words. You don’t need to be in a church building. Speak honestly to Him.

You might pray something like this:

“God, I know that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my sin and place my trust in Jesus. Please forgive me and make me new. I surrender my life to Jesus Christ and want to follow Him as my Lord. Amen.”

A prayer doesn’t save you. Jesus saves. The words above are simply one way of expressing genuine repentance and faith.

If you’ve trusted Christ, tell someone. Find a Bible-believing church where you can worship, learn God’s Word, grow as a disciple, and walk with other Christians. If you’d like to talk with someone about what it means to follow Jesus, we’d be glad to hear from you.

The journey of following Jesus begins with a step of faith.
